About Norway

Norway is a Scandinavian country that borders the countries of Sweden, Finland, and Russia as well as the North Atlantic Ocean and Barents Sea. It is a sovereign and unitary monarchy whose territory comprises the western portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula plus the island Jan Mayen and the archipelago of Svalbard. The country’s natural regions are very diverse with forest-covered hills, spectacular fjords, and glaciers.

With a country population of over 5.35 million in 2018, the major cities in Norway are located along the coastline, including the capital of Oslo. Norway is also one of the world’s biggest exporters of oil and gas and they are also in the forefront of deep sea drilling technologies.

What to Expect:
IFYEs will spend a couple of days in Oslo before going to stay with 3-4 host families who are rural-based.

2015 IFYE Courtney says that "While living in Norway as an IFYE, I was treated very much like a member of each host family. In general, a Norwegian’s way of life is very humble and focused on simplicity and equality amongst each other."

"A lot of leisure time is spent outdoors when possible. Many families enjoy spending time at their cabins as well as kayaking, hiking, fishing and horseback riding. Inside the home, baking and cooking played a major role during my exchange. Most of my experiences were based on participating in every day life and learning what it means to be a normal Norwegian citizen."

“The IFYE programs offer an opportunity to experience another way of life by living it: IFYE is truly a “learn by doing” experience. It is your chance to see new places, make new friends, and soak in another culture.”
