Thailand is situated at the heart of mainland Southeast Asia, covering the total area of 513,115 square kilometres. It is bordered by the Lao People's Democratic Republic to the north, the Union of Myanmar to the west, the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Gulf of Thailand to the East, and Malaysia to the south.
- Its shape, which looks like a golden axe, is divided into four natural regions encompassing a total of 77 provinces: the mountains and forests of the North; the vast rice fields of the Central Plains; the semi-arid farm lands of the Northeast plateau; and the tropical islands and long coastline of the peninsula South.
- The climate is warm and humid, with three distinct seasons: a hot and dry season from February to May, a monsoon season from June to October, and a cooler, dry season from November to January. High temperature is during March and April with average temperature of 28 degrees Celsius to 38 degrees Celsius.
The government of Thailand is a parliamentary democracy with a constitutional monarchy. Thailand's capital is known internationally as Bangkok but to Thai is Krung Thep (City of Angels). Of the country's 65 million people, about 7.8 million live in Bangkok.
Although Thailand is known as an agricultural country, it is also known for its delicious food, Buddhist temples, exotic wildlife, spectacular islands, and friendly people who symbolize Thailand’s “land of smiles” reputation.
From a 2015 IFYE
There are few moments more invigorating and fulfilling than those that take you off the tourist path. They offer a rare glimpse into a new country and culture and rare insights into yourself, as well.
Hear it from Beau (2015 IFYE to Thailand) who says, "Appreciate this stunning country while you engage with local individuals as an IFYE in Thailand. Become a member of the community, rather than somebody who was just passing through. It is very easy to make real friendships which often lead to new and exciting experiences.
You may have a family that is so different from your own and yet so similar. There may be a goofy uncle, a doting grandmother, and a bunch of cool cousins. The love in the room is undeniable, and you will be so grateful that you are able to be there and take part."
What to Expect:
IFYEs will arrive in Bangkok and spend a couple of days there before going to a number of host families in different provinces. While there, they will gain experiences and insight into: 4-H activities, ways of life in rural areas, family farming, living in nature, tradition, and culture. In addition, they will enjoy their visits to various tourist attractions.
