Citing concerns regarding the global pandemic, the IFYE Association of the USA, Inc. Board of Directors voted April 8 to suspend its 2020 international exchange program for both outgoing and incoming representatives. The decision supports the current travel bans and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and the U.S. State Department.
This year, plans were for participants to experience 13 countries as part of two- three- and six-month programs. The IFYE Association has been providing deep immersion cultural exchanges with countries around the world for more than 70 years, and this is the first time it has been suspended.
“Our primary concern is for the safety, health, and welfare of our inbound and outbound representatives, host families, volunteers and staff, both in the U.S. and in our partner countries,” said IFYE President Victoria Warren. Applicants and organizations providing direct participant scholarships to IFYE will receive refunds.
Founded in 1948, the IFYE Association of the USA, Inc. provides cultural exchange programming that places participants with multiple host families during a two- three- or six-month period in countries around the world with reciprocal exchanges in the United States. IFYE representatives experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to gain an understanding of the culture and lifestyle from those they live with while in the program. IFYE exchanges are conducted in collaboration with country coordinators. The program is facilitated and supported by the IFYE Association of the USA, Inc. The IFYE vision of “Peace through Understanding” continues to touch the lives of people around the world
